Where Are All the Female Musicians??
As part of my job as Head of Creator Relations I’ve emailed hundreds of musicians over the past year telling them about YouApp and the opportunity to partner with us as one of the first musicians on our platform, giving them access to their own iPhone app on the Apple App Store for free.
I’ve been astounded at the “radio” silence experienced by relatively few responses we’ve gotten from female musicians. So I thought I’d dive into our data a bit.
First some overall data on female artists:
Share of female artists in popular music in the United States in 2020 according to Statista was 20.2%
Down from 22.7% in 2012
YouApp has reached out to 73 female musicians (30%) & 241 male musicians in 2021
1 female musician without a manager responded out of the 73 total female musicians reached out to = 1.4% response rate
1 female musician with a female manager responded - but the manager ended up losing the female musician as a client
2 female musicians with male managers responded = which is double the response rate of female musicians with no management
2 female managers of male musicians responded = double the response rate of female musicians with no management but only .82% of all the male musicians YouApp reached out to and 7% of the male musicians who responded.
Over 30 male musicians with/without management responded out of 241 = 12%
The response rate for men musicians is 11% higher!
Possible explanations for why women musicians don't respond at the same rate as men to the opportunity to have their own app with YouApp: *Women aren't typically first adopters with new technology Women may lack confidence in their ability to charge fans *Not as many women musicians have managers handling inbound for them as male musicians *The possibility that some language in our email appeals more to men than to women (email is written and sent by our female co-founder) *Women musicians have some bias against working with other women
Would love to hear your thoughts on what could be going on or anything I might be missing here.
